New Offices & Maintenance Facility | Cairns Airport
GGI Architects was engaged by Hawker Pacific, now known as Jet Aviation, from the earliest conceptual stages of this critical project at Cairns Airport. This initiative aimed to establish a state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance hangar and avionics facility.
The project presented a significant and complex undertaking, characterised by demanding technical requirements, notably the capacity to accommodate large passenger jets for heavy maintenance. GGI Architects developed a comprehensive solution that not only satisfied the client’s highly technical functional specifications and ambitious budget constraints but also delivered a distinctive corporate aesthetic on a prominent site adjacent to the Cook Highway. Furthermore, the project successfully navigated a multitude of statutory authority requirements across various agencies.
The structural design extensively utilized advanced steel and concrete methodologies, incorporating pre-stressing and post-tensioning techniques. This innovative approach enabled the creation of a highly cost-efficient and fire-safe structure capable of achieving very large open spans, accommodating extraordinarily high point load requirements, and mitigating the inherent risks associated with aviation fuel fires. These engineering feats were achieved despite challenging site conditions, including extremely poor soil with low bearing capacity and the necessity to withstand high cyclonic uplift wind loadings.
Today, this facility stands as a cornerstone of the Far North Queensland economy, recognised as one of the region’s largest employers. It provides essential aircraft maintenance services for clients across Australia, the Pacific, and Southeast Asia.
