Practice Ethos
With strategically located offices in the Gold Coast and Cairns, GGI Architects and Landscape Architects deliver comprehensive expertise across a vast geographical expanse of Queensland and beyond. As an outcome-focused practice, the GGI team operates with a steadfast commitment to innovative problem-solving, guided by the principle that if a vision can be conceived, a pathway to its realization can be forged. Our enduring passion lies in crafting aesthetically compelling and highly functional built environments—be they architectural structures, vibrant public spaces, or integrated landscape designs. Leveraging extensive experience and deep understanding, we adeptly navigate the complexities and constraints inherent in diverse projects, consistently delivering successful outcomes that exceed client expectations.
GGI Architects was founded in 2001, emerging from a long-standing professional collaboration between Jamie Gordon and Greg Gould. Building on this foundation, GGI Landscape Architects was established in 2005, under the leadership of Rebecca Gould. Our portfolio spans the entire breadth of Queensland, from the northern regions of New South Wales to the remote islands of the Torres Strait bordering Papua New Guinea, and westward to Doomadgee, Camooweal, and Mount Isa, encompassing a broad spectrum of project types and environmental contexts.
Design Approach
At GGI, our design approach is meticulously tailored to the unique requirements of each project, recognizing that bespoke solutions yield superior results. While every endeavour is distinct, a fundamental focus on functionality underpins all our work. We prioritize a robust and comprehensive planning methodology, which then informs the seamless integration of aesthetic beauty, environmental context, and, crucially, adherence to client budgetary parameters.
We believe in thoroughly interrogating the client brief, rather than merely responding to it. This critical appraisal involves assessing its appropriateness for the site and its potential to achieve the client’s overarching objectives while skilfully navigating inherent constraints. Providing this insightful and critical perspective at the project's outset is arguably the most valuable contribution a design professional can offer, fostering a deeper mutual understanding between client and designer, and significantly enhancing the probability of a successful and impactful outcome.
Technical Expertise & Specialist Services
Through decades of accumulated experience and continuous applied learning, GGI has cultivated specialized knowledge across a number of fields, including:
• Water ingress into and around buildings and sites, which we frequently consult on to resolve long standing or complex issues. Water ingress and uncontrolled flow account for a very high proportion of building defects and site specific flaws in contemporary construction. Many of these defects are associated with, or rooted in, design shortcomings, and it takes a designer’s sharp eye and knowledge of “first principles” to resolve them.
• The preparation of visual impact assessment reports including graphic imagery and, occasionally, animated fly throughs. These realistic representations of proposed buildings or landscape environments are often pivotal in securing project approvals and serve as invaluable tools for addressing public concerns regarding visual impact.
Public advocacy and shaping public policy
GGI Architects has a long-standing commitment to advocating for sound public policy within the urban environment, engaging at local council, state, and federal levels. Our team members have actively served, and continue to serve, on local advisory groups, and provide expert technical peer reviews of public proposals and planning legislation.
A core objective of our advocacy is to re-establish policy settings conducive to genuinely affordable housing across Australia. Throughout our professional careers, we have observed how the escalating burden of legislation, coupled with the tangible impact of Not-In-My-Backyard (NIMBY) activism on planning approvals, has significantly reduced the per capita construction of new dwellings in Australia. This trend has directly contributed to price escalations that place housing beyond the reach of many. While considerable attention has rightly been given to the environmental sustainability of buildings in recent decades, GGI firmly believes that it is price sustainability which houses people!
People
GG
Greg Gould has earned a distinguished reputation as a practically minded and technically rigorous professional, and it is this expertise that has made his counsel increasingly sought after in complex building and site rectification matters.
Greg's specialist understanding of water ingress — the conditions that invite it, the consequences when uncontrolled, and the strategies required to resolve it — has evolved over decades of hands-on practice in the demanding wet tropics environment of Far North Queensland. Drawing on first-principles architectural training, an extensive career in building detailing and construction, and sustained professional development, Greg has identified and permanently resolved ingress issues in buildings with histories spanning up to ninety years — often succeeding where numerous experienced tradespeople had previously attempted and fallen short.
Water ingress and uncontrolled site inundation rarely originate from a single faulty element. Their causes are typically found in the intersection of design, detailing, and environmental factors — precisely the domain where an experienced architect's holistic knowledge proves indispensable. Identifying those root causes, and prescribing the necessary remedial response, is where Greg's expertise is most acutely felt.
Greg's advice is now sought in a formal expert witness capacity, particularly in disputes involving body corporates or legacy construction works. His broader specialist knowledge extends to condensation and mould diagnostics, overland flow management, and flood mitigation strategy.
