House Renovation | New Indoor & Outdoor Spaces

The Hall Street Residence project began as a modest extension and renovation, evolving into a comprehensive transformation of a 1960s fibro bungalow. Situated in a historic, tropical inner suburb of Cairns, this property presented a unique opportunity to blend existing character with contemporary living.

Project description

GGI Architects collaborated closely with the clients, a young couple anticipating family growth, who sought to respectfully retain the original structure's essence while significantly expanding its functional footprint. The brief called for more than doubling the floor area, incorporating additional bathrooms and bedrooms, and integrating practical amenities such as dedicated bicycle storage, all designed to accommodate their evolving lifestyle for the next two decades.

The renovation ultimately involved a complete internal strip-out, preparing the canvas for a thoughtfully conceived architectural intervention. The design profoundly celebrates its tropical context, seamlessly opening the interior to expansive open-plan living areas and meticulously landscaped outdoor spaces at the rear. These zones are designed for both vibrant social gatherings and dynamic family play, fostering a deep connection with the environment.

The architectural solution is characterized by a well-resolved, simple yet highly functional layout. This is complemented by a selection of refined finishes, including natural timber and stone, which contribute to an aesthetic that is both sophisticated and harmonious with its tropical surroundings.
